There are plenty of awesome devotionals out there that are made specifically for adults or children. Wouldn’t it be great to have one for the entire family? I recently had the opportunity to check out The Bible Is My Best Friend–Family Devotional. This book offers a wonderful alternative to regular devotionals, because it’s one that the whole family can study together.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Gather the family and spend some time with your best friend—the Bible! From best-selling author Sheila Walsh, the Bible Is My Best Friend Family Devotional connects families both to God’s Word and to each other. Fifty-two key scriptures form the basis for the devotions, which build on the verses, challenge the family to commit them to memory, and explore how each verse is part of God’s wonderful message. “Let’s Talk” questions urge the family to discuss what they’ve learned and offer challenges for different ages of children as well as their parents.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Sheila Walsh is a powerful Bible teacher and best-selling author from Scotland with over 5 million books sold. Her international ministry has reached more than 5.5 million women by combining honesty, vulnerability, and humor with the transforming power of God’s Word. Calling Texas home, Sheila lives in Frisco with her husband, Barry, her son, Christian, and three little dogs.
The Bible Is My Best Friend–Family Devotional isn’t set up like other devotionals where you have just a traditional Bible study. Complete with fun, quirky cartoon illustrations that children will enjoy, this one offers 52 separate devotions, one for each week of the year. For added convenience, the book begins with a table of contents to highlight what the weekly topic is about. In the back you’ll also find an index of memory verses. In addition to a verse and thought of the week, each devotion includes a variety of different tasks and actions that your family can accomplish together.
Every devotion starts off with a memory verse that ties into that particular thought/study for the week. After you read the devotion there is a Let’s Talk section that includes a set of questions that children can ask their parents, and vice versa. The next section is called Family Fun and includes an activity for the family to do, such as a scripture scavenger hunt, a reenactment of a “what would you do” scenario, a craft, etc. After that, families can set up for a Weekly Challenge which might involve a service project or even conducting some research that dives deeper into the weekly topic of discussion. Of course no devotion can be complete without some scripture references that you will need to look up in the Bible. One you finish each week’s devotion, you can also check off what you’ve just accomplished and learned.
This is the first family devotional that I’ve had the chance to take a look at, so I can’t really compare it to another. Having said, I’m a huge fan of this book! Each week offers a special heartfelt moment in God’s word, while engaging children of all ages by including real life examples and an assortment of fun activities and extras that follow.
The Bible Is My Best Friend–Family Devotional offers a truly amazing way to get children involved in the word of God. The extra features that are included each week, will really help them remember what they’ve just read. Taking it a step further by elaborating each weekly devotion with special activities just highlights the experience even more. The best part–the whole family can get involved, because there’s something included for everyone. I can’t think of a better way to spend time with the people you love, then to be sharing it in God’s word.
