In this, the first book from Keith and Kristyn Getty, you will learn a myriad of reasons how singing transforms, builds, and grows your faith and relationship with God. “Sing!” is a short book, easy to read, but it holds much wisdom and encouragement. Song and music truly is a beautiful thing…and in so many, many ways!
The Gettys share five goals in this book:
1 – To help pastors, musicians and congregations have a clear vision and understanding of why we sing.
2 – To help each of us realize the importance of what we sing and how those song choices affect our personal lives.
3 – To help us raise our families with an appetite for congregational singing and training in it.
4 – To help our churches become energized and more focused in their congregational singing.
5 – To help fire us to mission as we witness to others through the songs we sing.
Throughout these points, we learn that we were created to sing, that we should sing, and that singing is really so much more than that..singing. It’s a prayer. And it changes us. It shapes us. Music and songs and lyrics don’t save us, but they do point to the One who does. It really is like heaven coming down to earth and making Him known and present.
This book tells us why we sing and how we should do so. It teaches that the songs we sing on Sunday morning become the soundtrack to our week, which reinforces that truths that we came away from church with. This also shows the importance of what a song is saying. We need to make sure that the songs we hear in church are proclaiming real truth and not just feeding our emotions or getting us in the mood. That is a common problem with most modern “Christian” music these days.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others, especially those involved in the choir or music ministry at church.
