Sing!: How Worship Transforms Your Life, Family, and Church is a new release from Keith & Kristyn Getty that focuses in on the importance of singing in the Christian life. Rather than a book that gets bogged down in discussing differences in style the authors choose to focus on the fact that as Christians we are created, commanded, and compelled to sing and that singing affects our Christian life. The Getty state “five aims” for Sing!. They are:
To discover why we sing and the overwhelming joy and holy privilege that comes with singing
To consider how singing impacts our hearts and minds and all of our lives.
To cultivate a culture of family singing in our daily home life.
To equip our churches for wholeheartedly singing to the Lord and one another as an expression of unity.
To inspire us to see congregational singing as a radical witness to the world.
Singing should be a natural outflow of the Christian life. As rebels who have been redeemed by grace alone we should naturally want to sing to and about our great God. We should also take care in what we sing and make sure that the lyrics are rich in biblical truth and not just barely scratching the surface of who God is. The authors state this well by saying, “We are commanded to sing the Word of God – the truth revealed in the Scriptures, the story of redemption. Fundamentally, we’re to sing about God, revealed in Christ and supremely in His suffering and His glory, since that’s what the Word of God is all about (Luke 24:26-27). “Richly” brings to mind words like generously, magnificently, fully, thoroughly. Content matters….. If we only have space to sing a few songs on a Sunday, we need to make the time really count – to sing the best songs we can find. Why would we want to do anything less? We should be picky. The songs we sing should not a brush along the surface, or pluck phrases out of context, or focus exclusively on ourselves, or describe Jesus in a way His Word does not (or, still worse, to speak in contradiction to His Word). Every part of a lyric should link together to bring a wonderful, thoughtful, deep expression of Scripture to every singer.” I really appreciate that the focus of this book is to remind/educate Christians why we sing, to be aware of what we sing, and to sing out in our church and in our homes.
I think that this book would be an excellent small group or Sunday School study for any church. It would surely encourage the congregation and remind them of the great privilege it is to sing to our God and what a great benefit it is to our lives to sing gospel truths daily. Highly recommended.
I received a copy of this book from B&H Books in exchange for an honest review.
