This edition of Classic Hymms / Read & Reflect With The Classics is a simple guide for study, meditation and prayer based on the WORDS of 90 of the greatest hymms of evangelicalism. The simple design of the construction, from the classic blue cloth-over-board hardcover to the glued binding of the creamy pages, makes the edition much more affordable to purchase for the consumer. The layout is very user friendly with a nice sized font, great line spacing and a good amount of marginal room for notes or thoughts. The only “wish” I have regarding the construction of the edition would be for it to be Smyth sewn so the edition would lay flatter and the block would hold together much longer.
Regarding the structure and quality of the content, the best explanation would be—- Simplicity. For each hymm, the edition gives the title, the writer, the composer and the text of the hymm. Also, there are bible study questions for each hymm containing the biblical text associated with the hymm as well as great study questions which push us deeper into the bible. In addition to the bible study questions, there are also “Personal Reflection Questions” for each hymm which push the reader to apply the biblical truths found in the hymm in a very practical and thoughtful way. Finally, there is Prayer instruction for every hymm as well which will help guide the reader into a very biblical prayer.
Since the way the edition is structured gives the reader a great doxology through the reading of the hymm, study of the bible and finishing with a prayer, this edition could be a fantastic devotional. If I had to add anything to the edition it would be to also include the musical score as well as a short history behind the hymm, time period, author or composer. My reason for giving the edition 4 out of 5 stars is solely due to the glued binding which doesn’t allow the edition to lay flat on a table without assistance.
