My Little Words Devotional by Michelle Prater Burke is a lovely, sturdy book directed to toddlers. I shared this colorful book with my six year old grandson. He’s too young to read it alone so we read through it together. Although he enjoyed it, and I loved the discussion of each concept, I could not help but think it is too advanced for a two or three year old. The words, for example, prayer, love, brave and joy, can be introduced but the concept of Christian joy is beyond a toddler’s understanding. I would caution a parent to read through the book and make note of ideas that need to be better explained. Back to the joy word: the author describes joy as being filled with happiness. Christian joy has little to nothing to do with happiness. On the other hand, there are some beautiful concepts, like love. The author says “. . . love is the greatest thing of all. And God’s love proves it!” The pages are colorful, eye catching and beautifully illustrated. The last page has some advice for parents when reading through this devotional. I would recommend this book, with the above caveats, as a way to begin introducing Christian concepts to a young child.
