I have read several books on leadership. Most of them by very well-known speakers on the subject. However, in a large portion of them, I have felt like it was the business approach to leadership with a smattering of Scriptures thrown in to make it feel “just enough” Christian in application. When I got my copy of Designed to Lead by B&H Publishing, I was wondering if this would be yet another one of those books that felt like I was just at a business leadership event. Then I quickly realized as I was reading it, that was not the case. This is one of the few books that I feel really supplied a biblical and very practical approach to leadership Very well written and highly recommended to anyone who wants to understand the biblical approach to leadership.
I received a copy of this book from B&H Publishing for me to do a review on it. In full disclosure, I was not required or requested by B&H Publishing to write a positive review.
I would give this book a 9.2 out of my normal 10 point rating scale. On a “5 star” scale that some websites use, I would give it a 5 star rating.
The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255

It’s not just about leadership. It’s not just about discipleship. It’s both. Designed to Lead has so much excellent and practical guidance that is Bible-based. Too many books and lectures on leadership by even well-known people is more like the business side of leadership with little tidbits of Scripture thrown in to support their ideas. This book honestly surprised me with how biblical it is. It is clear that the authors wanted to find out what the Bible said about leadership and discipleship and then wrote a book on the subject rather than taking their own thoughts on leadership and find out how to support those ideas through Scripture. It took me a little bit to get into it, but not very long and I was hooked. Very well written and worth your time if you want to understand about leadership and discipleship (which aren’t separate entities like many of us make them). Highly recommended! B&H Publishing provided me a copy of this book in exchange for my open and honest review.

Goal of Book:
The authors’ goal is to encourage churches to be intentional and consistent with developing leaders which more often than not, does not happen. Whether you are a leader in your home, work, in the church or community, God has called us to lead others to worship God in Christ Jesus. The authors did an excellent job writing this book and showing practical and intentional ways that we can develop people into leaders to do just that..
My Favorite Part:
My favorite part was one of those “oh, yeah” moments where the authors relayed a common misconception that we as Christians often have. The misconception that leadership and discipleship are mutually exclusive. Rather, the two are so interwoven and don’t realize it leading us to a segregated and often ineffective approach to leadership.
I would highly recommend this book as a wonderful resource, not just a one-time reading. There is a lot of practical content in this book for any reader interested in leadership.
Who Would Enjoy This Book:
Like many of the B&H books that I have reviewed, this is yet another one that I would classify as a resource that you will come back to often. If you (or your church) is interested in God’s calling of developing leaders and disciples, then this book is one that I cannot recommend highly enough. Very well written and full of amazing guidance!
