I was initially excited when I saw the Holman Notetaking Bible. As someone who enjoys making notes and observations in the margins of my bible, I thought that this would be an excellent tool to enhance my personal devotions. That may still prove to be the case, but I’m not sure.
The problem for me is one I should have anticipated right up front. By leaving space in the margins for taking notes, there is no room for any author’s footnotes-a feature that I didn’t realize I would miss so much until it wasn’t there. Additionally, the text is smaller than the Bible I usually use for my devotions, so my old eyes have to work harder to see the print.
This is actually a beautiful bible, and I am sure that it would be very beneficial for many people. It just isn’t as functional for me as I had hoped.
