As a worship leader this book spoke to me. The reinforcement that singing is a vital part of the Christian life, the church and the soul was refreshing. Keith and Kristyn Getty have so thoroughly defined the premise behind why we sing our praises. It’s broken down into chapters that discuss how we are created, commanded and compelled to sing. That singing is personal but also a spiritual gift for bonding the family and for unifying the church. As you read through the book you realize why you are spurred to singing in the shower and at the top of your lungs in the car. Even the one who thinks they can’t carry a tune in a bucket will be inspired by this book and will be willing to step out and let their voice be heard. I’ve shared so many snippets from the book with my congregation and I would recommend it to every pastor and worship team as required reading.
Sing! is a spiritual growth book by Keith and Kristyn Getty. I think the authors wrote this book because of the churches much diversity in music. They want us to remember to worship God through music whether individually or corporately. While each generation brings in new music we must also remember the music of generations past.
This is a small hardcover book that has been endorsed by many people, several of which are well known. It is a book intended to be helpful for individual use and community discussion. There are questions at the end of each chapter to reflect on. Bible verses teach us to make music with instruments as well as our voices (see Psalm 98:4-9)
The first 3 chapters tell us of people in the Bible who sang to God. Chapters 4-7 tell us ways to incorporate singing. At the close of the book, there are Bonus Tracks written especially for different leaders in the church. Examples are musicians, pastors, and songwriters.
I wanted to read this book because music is my favorite way to worship God. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to worship God by singing, no matter how they sound. True worship comes from the heart.

Welcome back! I am so excited to finally be getting my first book review out to you all. I hope and pray that you all will be encouraged to pick up this amazing book and read it for yourself. It is truly amazing! The first book that I have chosen to review is called “Sing” by Keith and Kristyn Getty. Keith and Kristyn Getty are modern day hymn writers, international worship leaders, and conference speakers. They are probably most known for reinventing the hymn “In Christ Alone” with Stuart Townend. They have recreated countless of classic hymns and turned them into modern day songs. They published this book on September the 1st of this year and I am so excited that I am one of the first people (among many) to review and blog about this book.
I know that many of you are thinking that this book doesn’t pertain to you because you aren’t a singer, you’re not a worship leader, you don’t sing in the choir, you are scared to sing in public, etc.. I thought that at first too. I wasn’t expecting this book to be what is turned out to be, but it turned out to be absolutely wonderful! I encourage you to read this book no matter if you are a singer (or a reader) or not. It will change your life. It has changed my viewpoint on so much. There aren’t enough words to say without giving it all away, LOL.
So a quick overview of the book. And no, just because I give you a quick overview, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t read it. I am just going to go over the contents of the book (vaguely). Chapter 1 tells us and explains to us that we were created to sing. After God created us to sing, He commanded us to sing (chapter 2). One of my favorite chapters was chapter 3 and it tells us that we are compelled to sing and it breaks it down as to why we should sing to God without being forced to. Chapters 4,5, and 6 tell us that we are to sing with our heart, our mind, our families, and our local church. These three chapters teach us how to equip our churches and our families to sing wholeheartedly for God as an expression of unity.
This is by far one of the greatest books that I have read here lately (and possibly ever). It reminded me as to why I am to worship God and give Him all that I have (without being forced and told to do so). This book has been a fresh drink of water for me and has reminded me every single day of God’s never ending, unconditional love. That is all that I really want to cover for this book review (without giving so much away). I hope and pray that you all will read this book and that it will bring you a new perspective and a reminder as to why we worship and why we do what we do. I will include the link down below for you to purchase this book. It is a great book to do on your own, to speak on, use for a small group, and so many other things. I love you all! God Bless! -Anna
