I love that Rachel Swanson saw a need and found a creative way to meet it. I’ve heard Swanson talk on a few podcasts now about how this devotional came about. She wanted time to focus on scripture, and her daughter wanted mommy to color with her. So, Swanson combined scripture with coloring designs and simple devotionals.
The Big and Little Coloring Devotional gives you the opportunity to sit down with your child and color together. The book opens at the top, so you can sit across from one another. Most of the sets of pages give your child the scripture to color, while the adult side provides a devotional. The pages for your child are a more simple version of the adult picture.
This devotional would be a great addition to mommy/daughter dates, or even just in your everyday time together. I do love the way the pictures interact with the scriptures, and the way the kids pictures and adult pictures play off of one another! It’s a great way to focus time together with your little one on God!
How We’ll Use the Book
We will need to wait a little bit before adding this to our basket though. When I showed Sarabeth the book, she was excited about something new to color. But at 3, she quickly got overwhelmed even by the simplicity of the kids page. It’s probably more for an older elementary child. I think I will also spend a little bit of time coming up with some questions or things we can talk about together as we color. The devotionals are short thoughts, so it would be easy for you to help your child understand the verse a little better. But there aren’t any questions to further the discussion. I think coming up with my own prompts will be easy enough.
